New York, June 20. The Assistarrt Treasorer ibis P. M. rcoeived from the ecrelary of the Treasury the frfllowing important statement of ttie position of the public debt and eiroulatinn: -"The amount of dubt, ncluding uil legal tenders, notes and unpaid requVitions, is $1,711,939,516 ; amount of interest hearing legal tender notes withdrawn, ia $38,8-90,700 00 ; arnou-nt of .or-dinary lpgal tender notes withdrawn and placed in reserve, $17,238$72, showing a reduction at present of legal tender note of all descriptions of $56,149,572. This statement olio w s the actual present etate of tho debt and eirculation. Of course it wil] be necessary to replace a pcirtion of ■the five per cent 'lega' tenders tvith compound interest pix per cents. Sined, B. P. 'Chase." Mr. Cieco states, says the Commercial, on the personal nssurances of tho Secretary of the ïreii.-uiry, that it is not the purpose of Mr. 'Olíase to issue an amcunt of the compound interest sdx per cents, equivalent to the amount of legal tenders thiifl retired, t)ut to contract the eircuLrtion as much as possi ble, and to regúlate future issues of currency by t'he strictest necessity - There are thehighest officia'] assurances that these are Mr. Chase'e future intentions. The San Prandeeo Bulletin, of the 19th of April, status that the tofal number of guns on tho 'harbor defeuceg of that city wiU, in a few mouths, be nearly 300.
