To the President, olliccrs and inembers of Uir: Blxtorloal Society of tlie Slute of Michigan : Gentlemen - Sira: I have the honor, in behalf of the Licutemiut Colonel commanding the lst Michigan Cavalry, and the field, staff, and liao officers of the same, to forward to you tho tattered standard of our regiment. Yet we ti uat we have liever forsaken or dishonored it. lis glossy folds wore first broken by ihe hissing rifle and the liumrmng cannister shots at Hanover, Pa., Gettysburg, Pa., Hunterstown, Pa., Monterey, Md., Smithboro, Md.j Hagerstown Headquarters, Md-, Williamsport, Md., Falling Waters, Md., Neuby's Cross Roads, Virginia, Culpepper, Va., liobiuson's River, Va., Brandy Station, Va., and Brickland Mills, Va , in 1863. At the battle of the Witóorness, Va., Beaver Dam Station, Va., Yellow Tnvern, Va , Meadow Bridge, Va., Hanover Town, Va., Haushop, Va., Old Chureh anii Cold Ilarbor, etc. During the present campaign, three soveral times have we rallied upon and defended it against triple odds. Sirs, we venérate, we alniost worship it, aud confiding it toyonr care we humbly pray you will preserve it as long as the Peninsular State has a name and a place in the nation ; and whenever, God sparing our live to re turn, any of us shall buliold, we will bow to its f'ami'iar device, while we weep for our bravo comrades who have fallen beneath it.
