Tho Washington Chronicle his the fol Iovriiiw aocouut of the counterfeit treasury notes: " There have been received at the office of tho United States Treasurcr governnieut notes of the denoininations of fifties and teus, which have been altered, the fonncr from twos tnd the lat ter from ones, by splitting tho numbers on the backs of the fnictional onrfenej and substituting thern for the numbors origiually ou the larger notes. These notes thus changed have come iu eonsiderablü niimbers to the office of the Unilcd States Treasurer, General Spinner, and doubtlcss many of thetn arè in circula tion among the people. Tho substitution, howfcver, is not very skilfully made, and a critical examinaiion clearly discovers the fraud. The public are cautioned against roeeivÍDg or passing any note thus changed, as the penalties attaohed to counterfeiting will be rigidly euforced. " As thore often arise doubts as to the germineness of tho postal eurrency, those who observe the following facts can readily distiuguish belwetn a counterfeit aud a genuine noto : As eounterfeiters are obliged to wetprint thcir imitations on account, of the tretnendous machinery that is requisito for drypriutiiijr, all counlerfeits iire smaller than the genuines, and tlie heuds on the front are not so well executed. These are differences readily observable, so that no one need entertain doubts in receiving or passing notes of the fractional cuireney. I 1 - l -
