Bishop Burnettsays: - "In Berne they have a novel way of dealing with matrimonial disputants. Divorces wore freely granted; but first the applicants must go through this test: - A small room wa vpr-epared, in which Lusbnnd and v.if'o were put, the door being then clcsed, to remain six weeks, except it should be set in metion at the urgent and united rcq.uest of the wedded pair. Thore were iu the room one siool, one plato, ono : $poony a mii'.y of all the requisitos, and the solitary bed was of such dimensions if they chóose to "use it together, ' they must needs lic very close. Of one thing, and one only, there was a duplícate; and that was a treatise on the duties of husbands and wives toward each other. No visitor was pennitted to go near them : and they had only n gliuipse at iutervals of the grim face of the jan itor, as ho pushed the'r food through a hole in the door. The bishop stages tbat the test was attouded with the mest . wholesome resulta. In most cases, the paities were most excellent frionds in a . few daygj and very few could stand out inore than a íortnight. Another very gratifying circamstance was, that they had scarcely on record a ease in which a eecoud npplication was made by persous who had already goue throub tbs ordcal." Bfo ficUjau vp&
