A correspondent of the North Westeru Advocate gives the follovvitig description oí Salem, the capital of the State of Oregou : " 13y the votes past at the general election last June, Salem s fixed on as the capital for twenty years - i. e., it o&nnot be changed for that time. Salem lies on the lefl or east bank of the beau tiful Wallamet Iliver. ïhe site is one of the lovelieet in thu world. Twenty milos to the east are the foothills of the Cascade Mountama. Boyond them rise the lnfty range to an atti ude of about 5,000 feot, and from them in distinct view rise in cold, silent grandeur, Mount Ilood or Washington, and Mount Jef feraon, both oovered with perpetual snow. The former ia about 18,000 feet high, and the latter 15,000 The population of Salem ia about 1,500. It has excellent and abuodant water-power vhich is well improved. A largo woolep manufactory, the first erected in Oregon, is in eueeessful ope; ation, costing about $150 000, aud turning out a large quautity of woolen fabrics. Nature has made this one of the most beautiful places in thfi Wailamet Valley. Art and taste have availed themselves of the natural advautages, and have exercised their skill, not in vain, to render the political capital of Oregon attmetive. EU-gant buildings are ereoted, both for business purposea and for residences. The rebel Gor Harria has bt-en in consultation with Forrest, aud oihor rubel leaders, and, uukss the federal prevent it, a session of the rebel legislaturu will be held in West Tennessee, so tliat it may go abroad that thcy have per,maue;)t[y secured that portion of the State.
