An army letter has the following descriptiou of the manner in wbioh a veteran oldicr mukes himself comfortablö in amp : " It is a truo remark, that a man nevr knows how much he can do without uctil he tries it ; but it ia more to my resent purpose to say tbat ho never cnows with how little he can make hiraelf comfortable until he makes the ex)eriment. Nobody possesses this invalïable knowledge so rnueh as a veteran. -"ut a recruit ÍDto a forest of pine trees with bis shelter tent, and if he has no)ody but reoruits around liiin, ten to one lat you will find hiin under his slieler teut three weeks from that time. Not so with the veteran. If he be amped in the pine forest, give him an xe, a booí-leg, a mud-puddle. a board r two, and a handful of uails, and he uilds him a house, and a house, too, ornfortable and commodious, and not wantiug in arehitectural beatuy. First ie fells trees, thon cuta and notches his ogs and laya thein to the requircd ïeight. His roof ha puts on, giving it a jreat slope, and thatching it with the reen of the pine tops. " lie has been careful to leave winow spaees, and, taking pieces of his sholter tent over these, he has provided light, but keeps out the nipping air of winter. Then with his boards he niakss his door, aud, the boot-legs supplying hinges, it soon swings into its place. Thon he fiijs the spaces bêtween the log.s witti Boft earth from his mud-p'iddle, and his home is done, exeept the chimney, and the forest and mud puddle soon provides th;it, fur the chimney is nothing but a pile of' sticks pleutifully plastered without aud witliin witli mud. ïhen with his'.old axo he manufactures out of pino logs a full asaurtment of furiiiture, beds eud, chairs, table, wardrobo, and generally adds a mantel, then. wiíh a bright fire upon his hearth, he in prepared to laugh at winter, aud generally does.
