Capt. Barry was taken complctely by surpriso, but cuuld not forbear to express his tiiauks to the generous donors. He would ïiot attempt to conceal his gratification at this mark of esteem s uuexpected, aud ■which he feit to be f o uuworthily bestowed. During the time that he had beid the position of Provost Marshal of the District he had striven to do his duty, and, aside f rom the gratiücatiou of his owu conscienee, it was pleasing to know that he had maintained the good will of those assoo-iated with him. He conipiimented the employ es upou tbeir faithfulness, and assured them that to them, in a great measure, was due the credit of the excellent couditiou of the affairs of the office.
