Thrce dnys the General Assembly discussed the quo.stion wliethcr Cntholic bapüsm was valid. It was not tho use of the .symbol of Bápfisríi which engaged the atlention ofthese "fathers in the church;" it was not even the moral character of him who might bccallod on to administer the rite; the great question was, whethcr baptism by a Catholic pricst was valid. - AfteT the amplest discussion it was decided in thenegative. It was admilted that there were true believers in the Catholic denomination; that the Catholic priest, performing the ceremony, might be a holy man, uprighl in life and coñversation; but that could avail nothing; the single fact of his belong to what was deemed a corrupt religious body was enoiigh to vitiate any religious ceremony performed by him. Anolher question now comes up. Shall a man rob bis fellow man - not of his horse, his coat, his watcb; this were a question easily settled - but. shali he rob him of himself nnd all that that self can produce? Shull he do this, and be vet accounted a worlhy christian brolher? Howong did they discuss this queslion? Not moment; but one hour was spent in carying out a preconcerted movemem to tifie tliis great question, and prevent all iscussion upon it. Now, see to what all tliis tends. A convert claims admission into the Presbyerian cliurch. "Who baptised you?" - "Father C." "Oh - that will never do - it is no baptism at all.' "Bat, he is a pions man, a lover of God and his race, spollcss in life, eminent for good works." "I know it, but, ibr all that, you have not been baptized, for he bclongs to the wliore of Babyion." Another convert npproaches. "Who baptized youl" "Dr. W." "Ah- he is one of the largest slaveholders in the South. A great mannger is Dr. W. - Vould that he were as pious as he is wealthy! I5ut, he is a worldlv man, onc l have never thought well of him sincc he sold that poor worhari away from hei husband, for the bencfii of iheology, am chastised his son for teaching a slave hovto read the Bible. IJowever, tliis does not matter in the question before us - yourbaptism is valid- -for lie is in good slandir.g in our clnirch!" lt is an old ma.xim. that a diminutiön oftrue piety is frequontly accompanied by an increasing zeal for the externáis of religión. As tho weightier matters óf. the law are forgotten, the du tv of litlting mint and anise is magnified. The washng of hands and ups is nevcr more stricty altended to, tlian when Justice and tfercy are forgoticn. Tlie bloody-mmdcú inen wha led Jesus from Uaiaphas to 'ontius Pilntc, and cried, erncify him, )referring a malefactor to the Son of God, cvent uot into the judgment hall, lest tlicy should he defiled." beinsr about to cat the
