This party, in some States, is not ye very efficiënt in acting for Equal Kights tthere it has thö potver to act. Ita pro fessions are therefore worthless. Wi wil! now cite the instance of Connecticut where tho Whigö have a largc politica ascendency. Hopes had been entertain ed that if the Wfoigs carne into power heingso much more liberal than the Dem ocrats, under their nuspices the color ed disfranchised citizens of Connecticui might obtatn their just righls, nnd thus ah the New Ebgland States would present te the example of their sister Stales the spec lade of Equal Political Rights. The re 6ult of these anticipations is secn by the jbllowing article from the Chrislian F reeman: "OUR DlSPRAiCHI8ED ClTIZEXS. On Monday last, the Judiciary Commitleereported adverseïy to the petition of Wtn. Hopkins and others, for an extensión o( the right of suffrage to that class of our citizens who are now disfranchised on account of their color. The report was unanimously accepted, and a resol ut ion passed for leave to withdraw the petition. One member who would have voted in the t.negative, was absent at the time. We expected nothing better ofthe Democrats, hut the Whigs have made such loud pro"fessions of being "the true Liberty party," anrïrall that, that we tvere not quite preparcd to see them so unanimous in their proscription of a class of their fellow citizens on account of their color. Perhaps we ought not to be surprised, for there ís no Presidential election coming on next fall5 and the cajolingabolitionists into the party, is not so pressing as it was a year ago. This unanimity ofthe Whig Lcgislature, however, in voting for the continued disfranchisement of aur colorcd citizens, furnishes a good index of the araoont and quality of their love of impartial liberty, and how well qualified they are to wnge war against the Slave Power! What abolitionist will trust them after this? What man who regards the subversión of thp Slave Power as a work to be done, will hereafter rely upon either the Whig or Democratie party to do it? Ifwe trust them in questions between ,Liberty and Slavery, we trust them to the injury of the former. They are not reliable - and thesooner abolitionists make up their minds to do their own work, in a simple and direct way, without turning asido for banks and tarifls or sub-treasuries, or any mere financial issue, the sooner and the better will their work be accomplished."
