War Defaktmkht, Washington, April 28-1 P. M. To Major General Dix : A diapateh lrom Gen. Grant, dnted at Rhleijjh, 10 P. M., April 25tb, staten : " Jobu.-tou surrendered the floreos ín tiia coiunuud, en&racing all frorü hc-ru to tlio Ubatiahnoühia, ti Geu Shormafc on tho bnaiu ngreed Upon butivetü) Lee aod myself for tho Army of Northern Virginia. EDWIN U. STANTON, Sec'y ff War Special disputen to tiio N. Y. World. Haleigji, April 27. Tho past forty oigbt liours havo been nnioDg the most inteusely exoiting of the vcry exciting inouth wo have had. General Graut'a airivat seemod to iudio.;te that wo were to have au imruediate advanoe. Tbe nieu vvlio had bceu JounglDg abnit in hopea of going home, wore callud in to an uuexpected ilacicy. I au kound to say that the terms of tho Oiipitulations aprecd upou by Generáis Shorman and Johnston were for the n o t part ngreod to by the great msjority of the otüeors, Major-Ooueruls lilair nnd Logan being about tbe foremost to expresa dissent. It was explaiued by General Shennau's stañ cffioors that many of tbe provisions of the terms were made in order to avaid the terrible pilInging and uruelly oi a disbanded niob of demornlizc'd soldlers. Iinmediately upon General Grant' arrivül ou the a4th, word was sent to Ji.hnaton by special traiu of thö disapproval of bis terms. The responso brought bauk by the truce party that ntght was to the effect that Juhnston would meet General Sherman next day, 25th. Yesterday a special train started with Generáis Sherman, Schofield, aud Hoivai-d for Durham's station, the scène of tho previoUB interview, aod reached thoro about ono o'clock. General Johuston came an hour afterward, when the whole of the couditioiis were gone over. The subordínate officers remainod outsido discussiug the soveral battles io wbich they had been opposing each other. Afier a long interview the conference broife up with the result we had expected. The train did not get hero until eight o'clock last night, but it was soon noised about that the surrender was compiote. The teiins have not yet boen made public, but I have learued the fact that the terms are the same as thone of Lee to Grant, with soiue furthor limitations aud provisions concerning the privilege of the officers and mea to go boyond the present lir.es. As neither Jobuston nor Sherman expected the previous tertus would be aoceptable at Washington, they wera not surprised to find General Grant bearing news of their rejection By Johnslon's particular request, no civilians were present. Breckinridge remained abfont from the conferenc, and Gragt lid the samo. The whole of the proceedings have been conducted by General Slierruan, and wheu fully congummatrd will be sent forward to Washington for approval. Wade Hampton, who accompaniod Johnston in the first interview, was not there on the seoond. From reinarks dropped in conversation by the sïaff he is supposod to be acoimpanyitig Jeff, Davis to tbe Southwest. The surrender includes all the troops east of the Chattahoochee, which iucludes Georgia, North and South Ciiroliua, aud Florida. Desertions have been euormous within the past week from the rebels; indeed tho country about Greensboro' is full of stragglors from the Carolina army and paroled nieu from Leo's army.
