" The soldier hesiiated, but teeintr the hand atill extended, answer ed, " Yofi, sir," and titnidly advanced his own bunch of tives, Theu the General, still holding hü old eomvftde's hand in his, said, " Hw did you oome her?" The answt;r, " I just stopped to sce somo f'iends," almost took his breath as he (Hsoovertifi tho ridiuulous position he was iu. The soldier was a stragsler. - The armly olosped hand was d'rnpped lik a potato heatud iu a fiery furnace, tho nettlcd steed w;is violeutly fpurred, and with eyes turned neitber to the richt uor the luft, the General rode on, whilo all around thu air reeounded with many-voiced laughter.
