New Yobk, June 12. ïho fullowing ia the letter of the Emperor Napoleon to his cousio : Mouslear aucl Dear Oousin : I o iDiiot refrain from informing you of tbe paioful mpression I havo expirienoed on readi:ig jour speech at Ajaccio. Iü leaving you, duriug my absence, with the Empress and my sod as Vice President of the Privy Council, I meant to give you a proof of my frienship and my confidence, and I hoped that your presenoe, your eonduct and your ianguago would testify to the union whieh reigns in our family, butthe programme whieh you plaee under tho eyes of the Emperor can only servo tbe enemies of my goyernment. To judgments whieh I cannot admit you add eentiments of hatred whieh belüDg no longer to our day. To apply the ideas of the Etnperor to the presert time, if is necessary to have pa?sed through the stern trials of responsibility and power, and besidés, are we really capable, pigmies as we are, of appreciatiog at its j.ust value thé grand historicil figure of Napoleon, as in standing before a colossal statue we aro unable tu view the whole at once. We only seo the side whieh strikes our sight, henee the incompletenet-s of the reproduction, and the divergeneo of opiuton ; but what is clear to the eyes of every ono is, that to prevent anarohy in men's minds, that formidable enemy of tr'ue überty, the Emperor had established lirtit in hin fa:ni!y and aflerwards in his govuniment, that sovere discipline whioh admittod but oao will and ono action. I eannot heneeforth deviate from the same rule of eondoot. Whereon, monsieur and dear cousin, I pruy God to havo you in his holy keeping. (Signed) NAPOLEON. Prince Napoleon lost no time in making a reply to tho Imperial censure. - Tbe Presse was esolusively (avored with tho document, The Prince's reply is as follows : Sik - Tu cousequonco of your Msijesty's letter of May 23d, aud its publieation iu the Moniteur f thi-i nidruing, I resiga the viee-presidoiicy of the Privy Council, and also tie presideney of the Universal Exhibition of 1S67. Accept, siro, the homage of tho profound aud respectful attachment with whieh I ara of your Majesty's most devoted cjousin. "(aned) NAPÜLUOX JEROMEi l'alais Royal. May 27th, 1866
