Oue of the prettiest and pleasantest mornings of May, near the close of that delightful mooth of balmy airs and fragrant fiowert, the train for Louisville was freighted with an unusual nümber of elegaut women and gay, nicely dreesed men. As usual, among tho latter, was a largo proportion of Uucle Sam's pels with shoulder-straps. There was □ o longer any apprehension of guerrillas Or other marauders on the road, and after getting faiily under way, the passeugers catching the spirit of the luvely niorn, addresaed themselvos to the task of niakiug time pasa off pleasantly. It was nol long ere all who wero so dispos ed were enjoyitig themselves in some Way. Ou oce of the seats iu the ladies' car was a marricd lady witli a little daughter; opposite, faoing them, was another ehild, a son, and a eolored "lady" - we believe they aro all " ladies " uow - with the baby. The inother of these childreu was a beautiful matron, with sparkliug eyes, in exuberant health, and yiv-icious spirits. Behind her sat a young Lieutenant dressed to kill, and seekiug a victim. He coraped up an acquaintance with the mother by attention to the uhildrcu. It was uot long befóre he was asnaying tomake himself very agreoable to her, and by the time the sun begau tö decline, one would have thought they were oíd familiar friends. The Lieutanaut feit that he had made an imprestiion - h!.s elation mauifesttd it. The lady, dreaming of no wrong, suspeeting no ovil, was apparently pleased with her casual acqunintance. By uud by, the train approaciied the tunnel at M.uldrough's Hill. The gay and fetive Lieutenant leaned over aud whi.spered eometliing in the lady's ear. It was noticed that she appeared as thunderstruck, and her eyes immediately after flatned with indignation. A moment more and a smile lighted op hor features. What chunges ? That sinile, it was not of pleasuie, but was sinister. It was unperceived by the Lieutenant, She tiiadu him a ruply, which rejoieed him appiirerit'y very much. For tho uudtrstanding proparly of this narrative - this o'er truetale - we must teil the reader what was -whispered, and what replied : Whispered the Lieutenant, " I mean to kiss you when we get into the tunnel ! Eeplied the lady, " It will be dark; who will seo t !" Into eárth's bowels - iuto the tunnel, ran the oars. Lady and colored nurse quickly changed seats. - Gay Lieutenaut threw hia arms around the lady's waist, raised 'her from her eat and fast and furiously imprinted kisses on her lips In a few moinefitfs the train neared the end of the tunnel and glided out iuto broad daylight white lady looked amnzed, eolored lady bashful, blushing ; gay Lieutenant befogged. ' June' said the white lady, " what have you been doing?'' Responded colored lady. " JNothing." Tes you have," eaid the white lady, not iu an under tone, but in a voice that attracted the attention of all iu the car. ' See how your collar is rumpled, aud yóur bonnet smashed." Jane, poor co'.ored beauty, hung her head a moiñent, the "observedof all observers," and thon turning around to the Lieutenant replied, " this man hugged and kissed me in the tunnel ! " Loud and long was the laugh that followed, among the pasaongers The white lady enjoved tho joke amazingly.
