I he JSew York Post (Kep.) oannot defend tho military interference with the Riohmond election, and therefore whipa the Adm nistration over the lioad of the Empe'-or of tho French, as follows : " Nor s the exarnple of the French Emperor without iustruction for us. Our late insurgent States have been froia tke nature of the case, under mili tíiry rule, they are eüll held to uo small estent by rnaj r generáis, who act in coojuuotion with the provisional Governord ; arbitrary i nier f er enees, lice that whieh is said to have set aside the eleetions in Riehmond, are still loleraled on Ík ground of ntilitary uecessüy ; and thert is danger that we shall extend and inultiply these mi'itary Dterpositiona infttead of reduoing them. Not a íew indeed, of our unreflectiog and impotu ous politieians would make an Algeria of every one of tho rebel Sia'es. But with what eifect upon them, with what effect upon us, (vitu what a complete exlioctioQ of local int-titutions, aod with it the spirit of seli goverument ! with what an entire forgetiiilues of ihat harmooious union of local and general autborily, whioh lias been the eouree of our gtrength and elory as a republie ! Whilo older nations are abaudoning their centralism, let us hope that the United States, whicli set them the exainple of freedom, will uot uovv tako up their east-oLf errors."
