The steamship JJrother Jonathan, on her passage of Friday, July 28, irom San Fianoisoo' to Portland, 9regnn striuk asuuken rock near Grescent City, at 2 o'olück on Sunday anemoon, July 30, and sank within an hour, carryiüg down all but fourleen of her hundred and nixty-threa passengers and crew, Tlie Brothcr Jonathan loft San Francisco on Friday, July 28, at 10 o'clock, for Portland, Oregon, and Victoria, "V'ancouver's Island. Öhe bas been considered a fine, staunch steamor, and was eornpletely oveihauled and rebuilt in San Francisco within the [ast two years, sinco whea sha has plied between tbese poinis as one of the California Steara Navigatioa (Joinpany's line. Brigadier-Genoral Wright, one of tho passengere by the Brother Jonathan, entcied the service of the United States in 1822, and sarved honorably during the Florida Indian troublos, and was especially noted for bis daring bravery in the war with Mexico. The aasaultiup column at Molino Del Rey was under his leadership. At tho close of the. war witu Mexico, he was dotailed to diiferent districts of Oregon, California and the Dcpartmeut oí the Pacific. He was on his way to his comrnand, the Department of Columbia, headquarters at Fort Vaucouver, to which he had lately been assigued. He was acconipanicd by Lieutenaat E. D. Waite, Aid-decamp, who entered the sorvioe in 1861, and Major Eddyao additional paymastcr, who entere'd the service in the samo year.
