an act of Congress, approved July 7, 1862, it is provided that any alien of the age of twenty-one years and upward, who has enlisted or shall enlist in the arrnies of the United States, either the regular or volunteer forces, and has been or shall be hereafter honorably disclnirged, may be admitted to become a citizon of the United States, upon his polition without any pravions declara tion of his intenlion to become a citizen of the United States, and that he shall not be required to prove more than ono jear's residence within the "United States provious to bis application to become such citizens. In addition to proof of residence and good moral eharacter, it is required that the eourt adniittiug sucli alien shall bo satisficd bv competent proof', that the alien has been honorubly discharged from the sorvice of the United States. This act matenally alters previous laws, but does not in any manner do away with the ueoessity of procuiing regular naturalization paper.
