From the Iïu fíalo Conrier. We are called upon tb ia tnoruing to .chronielea torrible catastrophe which occured at Pratt & Co. 's rolling milis, Black Rock, about half-past seven o'clock yestorday morning, whereby three men were instant ly swept into etornity, and tvventy others reeei.ved injuries of more or less serious character. One of the boilers in the milis, from laok of water, it is thought, exploded atthe time stated, dividing into three parta as it burst, and svveeping in eitber direction through the wooden structure with the most terrifio violonce. The explosión destroyed about half the roof of the particular building in whieh the boiler was Jocated ; about ten feet of the boiler, moving at an elevatioD ol twelve feet irom its foundation, Bhot through the south end of the building like a cannon hall, dropped on the sidewalk a few feet froru the company's offiee, and bounded a distance of at least eighty feet into the yard beyond, making the entire distanco from its foundation nearly threo huadred feet. Sorae thiriy fivii feet of the boiler shot in an opponite direotion, and coming iu contact with one of the furnaces in a building partly partitioned off from that in which the explosión occurred, swept away the two arnoke staoks, cut one of the boilers almost in two, and moved the solid mass of iron-braoed brick-work up on whieh the boilers rested, completely out of its place, almost demoiishing tha entire furnaoe. About five tect ot this end of the exploded boiler cannot be found, and it will undoubted'y be discovered at some remóte place from the building. The force of the explosión la seon on all sides. but tho fact that the buildings wero only temporary wooden ones, and the further faet that the ftirnaoes in the north building were not in use, prevented tho disaster from bcing more wide-sproad atid destructiva than it proved to be. The attending loss of life renders the oalamity a serious one indeed, and makes the dernand for a rigid and goarchiog examination imp?ralive. As wo have stated, three men were killed outright, and twenty injur ed. Threi! or four of the wounded men are not expected to live, and it may be that as we write ome of them have terminated their suflerings in death. A French gentleman who had been satirized by Voltaire, meeting the poet soon alter, gave him a licarly drubbmg. Tho poet immediatt'ly flew to the Duke of Orleans, told him how he had been used, and begged he would do him jus tice. " Sir," replied the Duke with a significant smile, " it has been done you already." Gen. Sherman has purchased á splendid resideuce in St. JLrouis for 826,000.
