- Croup is nn ïDüammation of the inner surface of the windpipe. Inflartiroation iuiplics heat, and tbat heat must be subdued, or the patiënt will inevitably die. If prompt eflforts are made to cool tbe parts in the case of an attuck of the croup, relief wül be as prompt as it is surprising and delightful. All know that cold applied to a hot skin cools it, but all do not well know and understand that hot water appücd to an inflamed skiu will certainly cool it off. Henee the application of iced water with linen cloths, or almost bot water with doublé flannel, or two folds large enough to cover the wholo throat and upper part of the chest Pnt these in a pail of water as hot as the hand can bear, and keep it thus hot by adding water from a boiling tea-kettle at hand. Let two or three flannels be in hot water all the time, with a dry flauncl covering the wet one, so as to keep the heat in to ome extent ; the flaneéis should not be bo wet when put on as to diibble, for it is important to keep the clothing as dry as possible, and keep up the procees until the phlegm is loose, the child eaeier, and beginninc: to f all asleep ; then gently wrap a dry flannel over the wet one which is on, so as to cover it up entirely, and the child is saved.
