Bna. Beckley & Foster: - In a late number of theN. Y. Evangelist iheie are some remaks respccting revivals of religión in slnveholding churche, and the duty of praying for them which seem to me to contravene"the xvord and to be opposed to God's plan, as declared by Isa. 58. Here is an extract. "A general revival of religión North and South would do more to cement nnd strengihen our [Jnion and remove the evils out of it, than all medicines else put together. This is the way indeed in which wc hope God wil] remove the evils of slaverv. And henee the absurd and self dostructive folly of those who limit the Holy One of Israel and pretend that Godcannot, and will not bless the churches nt ihe South while they ho!d slnvas,- when the very way in which he will redeetn them Irom slavery will he hy pouring out bis spirit upon them." Now this is nstrange jumble of truth and orror to emanatefrom soclear a head as Geo. B. Cheevers. The Doctor has certainly mistaken the naturo of the disease, and thïnks palliatives will answer where the actual caulory is indicated. In tho course to be pursued he is expecting a blessing before the tithes are brought into the store house. He thinks God will hear while iniquity is regarded, not in the heart only, but openly practiced, - and sucb iniquity as Israel is not charged with. How diffcrently God tallul"Cry aloud, spare not, lift up your voico liko a tnímpet, and show my people their (ransgressions, and lbo House of Jacob fheirsins. Yet they seek me daily as a people that did rightcousmess and forsook not the ordinanceof their Goo'j ihey nsk of me the ordinanee of justice, they take delight in approaching unto God. Where Ibre have we fasted, and thou seest not! say they." What sailh God? "Is t such n fast as I have chosen"? "Is nnt tliis the fast that 1 have chosen! tp loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppresáed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to tho hungry, and Ihat thou bring the poor that are cast out, to thy house? VVhen thou seest the naked thal thou cover him: & thal thou hide not thyself from thy own flesh?" This is to precede the revival - mark the result. "Then shall thy light break forth as the. morni-ng and thy health shall spring forth specdily: thy righlousncss shall go bcore thee, and the glory of the Lord shall be thy rezoard." Now it is nota revival of slaveholding religión we shouid pray for. Uut this is the religión of the South, and the religión thnl their revivals nourish. Neither is it a revival of proslavery religión, we shouid ask for, but thls is the religión of northern revivals to agreat extent. We shouid pray then for a revival of Bible religión vvhich will "break every yoke." But how is this obtained but in God's way - 'Cry aloud, spare i.ot.' Aswell might we pray for a revival of Atheism as of that religión which tramples on all the laws of God, and sanctions every crime, incest and murder not excepted. The question may be asked, have the revivals of religión, so called, seyered the yoke of oppression and breathed the spirit of impattial love into the heart of the convert? W no., thcre is an essentiai element of a Bible revival wanling. - and something nuit be done besides praying God to revive religión. The trulh must be proclaimed - God's truth - 'let my people go': nntislavery iruth - 'lovelhy brot lier a.s thyself;' - :he Doctors charge recoils upon himself - superlative - dostruct've Ibll y! lo talk of revivnl killing S)n"ery!- -such revivad! - rowvals that man the grpat bulwurk of Slavcry, and sweep men-stealers and slave-brceding. wornanwhippers by scores iuto the professed church of Christ, with all their sins fullblown, - uncanceled, unannealed upon their henrts! May God aave ua from sucli revivals! If the Doctor menns a revival of antislavery Bible rel'gion, wliy dou't he cry aloud - and teil us ao. How the Doctor knows tiint God will save the south from Slavery ly puuriug out bis spirit upon them is more (han I can divine - it must be a different spirit, than ilmt which bas prompted revivals there heretofore. God scems to have put n lying spirit in the mouth of the prophelsand they put (larkness for light, and cali good, evil, and evil, good, and if a faithful Micaiah )rophesies riglits things, he is fed wilh the bread of aííliction and the waters of affection. If the D. D's. would stop fighting Garrison and go at slavery, Grrrison's occunnfinn wnnlH cronp.
