The following was received to-day at the Army head-quarters : Fort Ellis, Montana, Maroh 23. Gen. P. H. Sheridan, commanding tbc military división of tho Missouri. In answer to your telegram reoeived on the 22d inst, I report that nfter having mude evcry effort to gel the judgmeEt of tho officers of tho commaiid I am satiiflod that the followiug numbers npproximate nearly to tho exact truth : The number killed at the Pieg-an village w&s 172, of whom 120 were able bodied men and 53 woinen and children. One hundred and forty womon and ohildren wcro afierward eaptured nnd relcased. I believe that every effort was made by the officers and men to eavo the noncombatnnts and that suoh wonien and children as were killed were aacidentally killed. Tho report publiehod ín the Eastern papers is wholly and maüciously falsa. It seams inoredible that tho falso assertions of two persons, neither of whom bas made any effort to inform himself in the matter, sbould outweigli the reports of thogo engaged in the fight and who feel that thoy hare nothing to palliato or conceal in their conduct. All that the offiucrs demand of the authorities is a ful! and complote investigaron of tho eampaign, and less than this cannot be conceded thena.
