We visited, not long since, n pretty littlo village in a neigbboring State, which, in its local poaition and circuraetances, reminded us vety much of Stratford upoD Avon in England. There was tbo eanio broad sweep of green field?, the same graceful wiudiDgs of a river, and the game distant glimpses of blue bilis rising ia tbo far horizon - btit thebouses? Well, the most of them were constructed in good taste, and were pleasantly set in thtir borders of foliage nnd flowers. The arehitects, the carpenters, and the gardeners had done their work with intelligence, nd gonerally with taste ; but the painters, alas! seem never to have heard of any harm-inious tints orfolicilous blendings and contrasta of coloring - of nothing, in short, but ao odious green and white. AH tbe surfaces wero a blinding white, and all ihe bliüds and shutters a flagrant green - nothiog more hursh, moro repuifive, more crude, more utterly at variance with every díctate of good taste than tlio green and white boscs, which pained tho oye to look at in lbo bright Buminer eun, and whieh filled the hcart, not with a feeling of pleasuro and repose, bul with sornewhat of uneasy indignation. Why should the eweetest and lovoliest of rural nookn he staioed snd desocrated by thesaglaring daubs of inoongruous color? lf the owuürs of theui have not sufiicient culture to select eoaie gentle noutral tint, somo tender graj', some cool brown, with tho nocesuary shadings in each caso, why do they not consult a professional architect of competent skill and judgment. - Irom J'utnanïi Magatine for July. A printer' devil, wanting to kiss bis gweetUeart, addressed her as-follows: " Misa Lucy, can I havo the pleasuro of placing ray ' impriDt ' upou your bill ?"
