The Chicago Citizen referring to th puhlic vessels on our Lakes, says: "Anotherpiece ofprofligacy was the experimental construction at Bufialo of the little iron steamer ABEUT,which,after all sums nsked for had been expended upon it, couïd not stem the current of the St. Clair river. The Abert was built for the useofihe Topogrnhical Corps of Engineers, nnd the firsl cost was fi ft y thouaand dollars, but after attempting to come round the Lakea, returned to Buflalo, and laid on the beach until I h is spring, when it was got oiT, the submerged wheels thrown away,and the common side wheela substituted at an additional cost of somo fifty thousand dollars. We are happy to idd that her powers of propulsión were, ifter this increasedoutlay of the people's noney, sníTicient to overeóme the current )f the St. Clair river, and she is now ín he service of the U.
