Nothiiig'but being chained to dead issues, which will bc its own fault, ean bring defeat to tho Domocratic party in the next campaign. Ox Friday cvening of last weck Hon. C. L. Vallandkiiiam, of Ohio, was accidently shot by a pistol in bis own band, and died froin tbe effects of the same on Suturday luoming. Mr. Vallandigiiam was engagod in defending a man on trial on a charge of inurder, and was explaining to bis associate counsel his theory that tbe deceased accidentally shot biraself. Taking a supposcd empty pistol from tbe tiible be put it in his pocket, and drawing it out it was dischargud, the ball entering the rigbt side of the abdomen. It was not extractod. Mr. Vallaxdigiiam has boen so long prominently before the people that his sudden and untimely death has caused a groat sensation throughout the country, and political frionds and political enemies alike sympathize witb hig bercaved fainily. - Whatcver may be said of Mr. Vallandigiiam's political opinions and actions during the war, bis ability and personal ijitegrity are unquestioned. He honestly followed his convictions, and in those convictions was nearer right than some of bis ultra opponents. His recent " New Departure " was again bringing him promincntly to the front, and his death is universally regretted. - The accident and death occurrod at Lebanon. Mr. V's. son and a number of warm personal friends were present with him in bis last hours. Mrs. V. bad gone to Cumberland, Md., but the night before to attend the funeral of a brother.
