We pubKsuad a day or two since an item regardSng ttie consolidation of tho territones. Tha iullowing letter from Mr. Chaffee laore-fully oxplaiiiB it : Washington, Jan. 19, 1872. Wm. N. Byers. Esq. - Dear Sir : I recoived your dispatch announcing passage of state memorial and youi; letter of the 9th inst. The niomoraul has nofc cometo light yet I think we can mako a good ehowing upon our own case, und I am in hope of being suocessful on our own limita.- I expected there would be somo oppoeition in Southern Colïado, but did not look for any in Denver, I havo reoeived some letters, howeverr which indicate opposition even thero. Members and senators teil me the Potter proviso amounta to nothing ; both Trumbnll and Wilson ay so. Now this is what I propoce to do : Try it on our own limits. ff I find it cannóí be pas.ed I will put in Wyoiuing, unies I liear enough from tho territories to make it pretty certain to be votfd down by the propio. If these Bchemcü fail, I am preparing a bilí which will pive all the territories an opportunity to beoome states. It will not be compulsory, but whenever the provisions of the bilí are coinplied with, they can becom states. Add all that part ot' California Bouth of the thivty-fifth paralli.1 to Arizonn, into ono State ; add Utah to Nevad ; add Washington Oregon ; add Dakcta to Nebrask ; Colorad! and Wyomiiifr oue iitate ; and Idaho and Montana one State. This will dispose of all but New Moxico, and when they got somo railroiiiï in there it will mako a State of that. I -will hart' suitable proviso for the future largo population. I believe this -will be popular hcre, and I believe it will be unicU better"for the West. Tf every one wHs hasí a tiend in Congress would write him on our Sto question, it would do good. Txaly youis,
