In a oomratmfcation tb the Kittnanning Free Press, Dr. Jv M. Taylor calis the attontion to an article from the pen of K. Landell, M. D., of Porte Algre, Brazil, published in the American Journal of MediaülSHence, of f date Öct., 1857, in which he advocates tüe internal administration of vaccine virus in the treatment of small pox. Dr. Taylor thcn proceeds : Being impressed with the idea that tho treatment was rational, I deterniined to give it a trial the fitst opportunity. On the 18th of Deomber, 18S9, I was oalled on to visit a child near two years of age, laboring ander small pox, the pustules baing first observed by her parents on the 16th, two days previous to my first visit. I first gave a dose of calomel and rhubarb, sufficient to opérate moderately on her bowels ; thcn, after nbtaining the sanction of her parents, I put onoquarterofa good-sized crust of vaccine ■irus int o 16 teaspoonfuls of water, and direoted one teaspoonful to be given every three hours. On the 21st, three days after commenoing tho remedy, the pustules were so complotely adapted that I considered my patiënt out of dangor and quit visiting her. AU tEe medicine this child took in addition to the above was some mild laxativo every secoud day when neoessary. From the number of pustules on this child (not protected by vaocination) I have no doubt she would have been serums if not a fatal case under any other treatment.' Two years after treating the above case I had an opportunity of examining her, and could not find a pit or a mark on her person. Since the foregoing case, similar treatment, on three different occasions, had been attended with like satisfactory resulta. I do not snppose any injurious effect would follow much larger dosos, and by observing the difforenoe between large and amall doses in the rapidity of recovery, we could soon determine the quantity adapted to ordini.ry cases. I think tho remedy should be resorted to as soon as possible in the dlsease. One person adminÍ8teriiTgr the vaccine virus ty my directions assurod me that where the virus was given in tne fever before the pustules appeared, they never developed. Tho only precaution necessary to adzninistering the vaccino virus is to have a good article, to mix only so much at once m will last one or two days, and keep it in a cool place. ïljePicIjtganrps
