I bought a horso the first of lust winter which appcarcd to bo all ïight - in good condition, bair looking nico, limbs all smooth - harnessed him to a sleigh and rodo away. As oftcn as I stopped and hitchcd he would pa w with bis foro feet and also with bis bind foet ; sometimes bo would lift bis bind toot so bigh as to e;et over the traces. Rode home and put bim ii thé stable. Soon bcard bira pawing lustily. When I went into the stable be rushcd np into the stall as far as ho could - snotrted, trembled and looked back at me as though he was frightoiied. Tliis told me as plain as any language could, tliat he bad been wbipped for pawing. Here I found a trouble worse tban tho pawing. There are fow inore daiigerous i'aults i 11 a borse than to be frigbtened when yon come near him. I first wont to work to cure tbis fault by pettinghim, feeding him from my band and in the stall with applfis, pears, gingerbread popped corn and evorything I thougbt would please him. Finally made him understaud that wo never uso whips in our stable. I watcbed him to ascertain the cause ot his pawing ; found he was inclincd to rub his sides and neek, and his mano was mostly rubbcd off. On close exauiination found small patcbes of eruption on tho skin ; also found just below the lo wit oud of the short ribs, a soft wart an inch long and half an inch thick ; this yielded to ashes, and was wcll in loss than two weeks. I conoludod tbat pawing was caused by parasites, such as licc or itch, or by a humor on the skin, sulphur would bo the thing ; gave a largo spoonful overy day in his meal. Turnod him out half an hour threo times a week to prance and roll, and decided if tbis course was not effeetual, my next would bo to givo him more work and loss grain ; but ho is cured.
