This story comes frora Bangor, Maine : Near Bangor, in a little village, there dwelt, many years gono by, a lay inember, who kept week days a country store, and on Sundays he would preach, or exhort, around araong the neighboring towns, where ho could find a vacant pulpit. He was a man of limber tongue, and could sell Yankee noiions and preach the gospel very handy. It was nis way to load up a wagon and pcddle all through the country, leaving his storo in thü charge ot' his wifo during his absence. Finding himpolf, late in the week, upon a certain time, too far from home to got back, and having sold out his loud, whioh at that time con?isted principally of dried apples, which, by the way, were a little worniy, he gave notice that he would preach the next day (which was Sunday) to tho people. Many gathered in to hear him. His text was : " And by thelr fruit ye shall know them." Ho handled this subjoct in his usual gallant manuur, and elosing up his sermón with a glittering paragraph, he repeated the text : " Yes, my friends, and by their fruits yo shall know then" Just at that point up jumped a re tai 1 grocer iu the place, who had dealt with the exhortar ttie aight before, and said, loud ertough to be heard if the chürch had been twioe as largo : " Yes, my friends, and by fche worins ia their dried apples, too."
