Wendell Phillips And Christianity
The New York World takes a little of the " higU-tontd morality " out of Mr. Phillips' denunciation of Mr. Suuiner as follows : We cemmend to the Christian admirers of Wendell Phillipá and Mr. Boutwoll the commentary of those gitted philanthropi&ts upon a soiuewhat venera blo diso jurso known as tho Sermón on the Mount. In that discourso we read : " Love your eneinies, do good to theni which bate you, bless thein that curse you, and pray for them which despitefuliy use you." Bu, says Mr. Wendell Phillips, indorsiug Mr. Boutwell and denouacing Mr. Sumner : " We put aside with the scovn it doserves the iusult iuiplic d in preaching to us peace and reconciliation." It appears to be Mr. Phillip'B iiupression trmt the " insult " which he thus " puts aside with scorn " wus offored him by Mr. Greeley. But wo doubt whether the evidence of its somewhat Lftier origin will eonimand for it froui hiui auy more respect.
