Tho holding of these places is a burden to the offi'ior. An appointee holds it as long as he can, and Ihenseuds in his resignation nnd reeominends somt' ncigbbor who will consent to titke the placo, wberenpon tho First Assistant i'ostmaster General addresses a noto (printod fonn) to Gov. Manj of these small officers hiive been changec in this county twe or threo timos during the past six ycars, and thero is little doubt that his rcfommendations have al boen honored so far as these places are coneeniftd. But how is it with the othor ten 'r lot the officos at Lansing, Charlotte, Brtttle Croek, Marshall, Albion Chelsea, Pitrma, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti answer. Every office of any consequencc in tbe Third District is held anc controllrd by ti:e graat Perchoron Senator, except Jacitson ; and while the st:it; ment made at Pontinc mny not be untrue, the impiesgion sought to be conveyed is as fülse at. u depraved heart coulü woll oonvey in ?. nianywords, While upon this subject, I wish to state certam faöts regarding the appoiutment of thr postmaster at Jnckson, to wluch Mr. Creswoll alludfd in such elegant ternib at Jackson, which a friend of mine states c f his own knowledge. He says : " I was in Washington at tho time, and was at Guv. Blair presented hia pilo of papers to Mr. Marshall, and said nearly as follows : ' Mr. Marshall, these partiea reoommend t!ie appointmont of Mr. Seaton as postinastur at Jackson ; I think Mr. S. a ootupetent poreon, and that liis appointmen t will satisfy tho business men of iny city.' and, bowing, left the offine and the building, without seoing Mr. Crcswcll at all."
