Washington, Uct. so.- The JJepartmrnt. of Stato has received a dispatch from Vice Consul Saunders, at Nassau, announcing the loss by firo of tho steamship Missouri. Key West, Fla., Oot. 30. -Tho steamr Missouri, of the Atlantic Mail Line, burned at soa in a gale on the 22d inst., aboot twenty-fivo miles from Abaco, en rmtte for Havana, tia Nassau, N. P. - Twelve persons were saved. The fire was discovered about 9 A. M., in tho pantry, nd suddenly burst out in volumes of fliinio auiidships, spreading rapidly over the ship. The boats were launehed immediately, and all but one were swampod. At once those rcmaining on board wertj ooinpcllod, on account of the violenco of the flames, to jump into tho soa. Those Baved landed in one of the boats at Abaoo about six P. M., the evening of tho 22d, and were taken from there in a sinall schooner to Nassau. It was a terrible sight for thoso in the floating boat to sec tfcose in the water clinging to tho gwumped boats, begging for nssistance. Thero were about ten lacües aboard. It is not known whetherany of tho missing have since been picked up. It is suid that the captain ueed every effort to save the live of the passengers. 'l"hreo of the passengers arenow here. The origin of the fire is unknown. Two of the boats of tho ill-fated Missouri wore burned alongsrde of tho vessel, and; tiiere is no probability that the others ever roached the shore. It Uprobnble that not a sitiglu life would liave been saved, had it not been for John Culjner, a residedt of Kleuthcra, and a passenger on board. A now hoat liad been purehfised' in New York and plhcod on deck, but as the wêather had been boisterous she had not boen seeurod. When ür was known that the vcssel would be dettroyed, Culmcr, with a vcry few era, launohed this boat, lioMing fast to tho painter, wheii he jumpfd overlward and swmiii tho boat.
