From a report presen tud to tlieLife Insuranco Company of tho Kailroad Conductors of tho United Statos wo lunrn tlmt during: the ytr onding August lat, 1872, no luss than thirty-two conductora have been removed ttota the assooiation, eithor by sudden death, diseaso or permauoiit (Jisability for life on the road. - An oxauiinatiou into the statistios of these remováis shows tho füllowing facts : Sixteen conduotors met with death at their posts, ot' whom uleven wore on freight .trains and iivo with passenger f rains. Two conductors had cach au arm amputatod, iindone lost a leg by accident ; ono diod of sunstroke on tho Nuw Jersey Southern, threo died of spino disease, and twelvo died of cousumption, every. ouo of whotn were passenger con(luetijrs. It is a luattur of gruvu consideration for conductora gonerally that disoaso claims such a largo percentage of their nunibor, but it is presumablc that eating hurricd meáis, keoping irregular hours and exposure to all woather is thu cause of it. As the niain railroads of this country are all earning largo dividends for their stockholders, thoy are in condition to have a sufficient nutnber fof conductors to prevent thera beiug brought to early graves by over-work. Tho pont of conductor ou a passonger train is a fearfully responsible One. The lives of hundreds of human beings aro daily in their keeping. This being the caso it is important that they should havo tho full possession of all their physical and mental vigor in order to nieot any eniergency that may arise. This thoy cannot have if compellod to run coustantly between widely soparated points. If railroads will employ moro conductors and pay theiu liberally they will deeroase tho nioxtality among this class of their employees and at the saine time iucrease tho safety of their trains. Xowadayn, it is not the oustom, in polite society, to any that a man drinks. Tho infonnation is convoyed ïnuch more neatly by sayiug of a man that " he throws his Httlc flnger over his thuiub."
