About seven o'clock last ovcning a fire )roko out on the sccond floor in tho wood iop of the Michigan Central Car Works n Woodbridge kreet, below Fourth. An larm was proinptly sounded, and within very brief time thcre werc several steamrs on hand pouring an immense volume f water into the burning muss. The juildiiig was oï briek, but it was filled vith innainmabie stutf, and it was not within the range of possibility to stop the estruction within. For two hoiirs flrenen, railroad employés aiid citizen volunteers worked with heroic might, much f tho effort being directed to the presrvation of adjoining property. This vas no sraall part of tho task, as sparks nd íirc-brands descended in n constant howcr upon lumber pilos and wooden juildings. Thn main liro however, was at length fairly enoiroled by water treanis, and then it became plain that no urther spread of the fire need bo appreiended. Tho burned building waa about ono ïundred and eighty fect long and sixty 'eet wide. In this was consraod an immense amount of car material, topether with all the massive and costly niachincry and the tools belonging to workiueu in the lighter branches of car building.
