The followmg directions in relation to preventiug the spread of smallpox may be of service. We take them from an exchange whoss name we have lost: g" 1. On th first appearanco of the disease the patiënt should bo placed in a soparate apart m. nt, as near the top of the honso as possible, from which eurtaing, carpet.s, bod-hangings, and other oeedlesi articles of fumiture, should be removed and no one oxcept tho medical attendant and the nurso or mother be permitted to enter the room. " 'Z, A basin of chloride of lime, or carbolic acid, should bo placed near the bed tbr the patiënt to spit in. "Handkerchiefs not to be used, but piceos of ragemployed instead, for wiping tbe nose of the patiënt. Each piece, after being used, should be immediately burncd. "4. A plentiful supply of water and towels should be kept for tho use of the nurse, whose hands, of necessity, will be soiled by the secretions of tho patiënt. In one hand basiu the water shouM be impregnated with some fluid of chloride, by which the taint on tho hands may be at once removed. " 5. OutsHe the door of the sick room a sheet should be suspended, so as to cover tho entire doorway ; this should bö kopt constantly wet with a solution of chloridejof limo. The effect of this will be to keep every other part of the house free from infection. "6. The discharges of the bowels and kidneys of the patiënt should be received into vessels charged with disinfectants, such as the solution of carbolio acid or chloride of limo, and immediately removed. By these means the poison thrown ofl' from internal surfaces may be rendered inert, and deprived of the power of propagating diseu.se. " 7. Tha thin skin or eutiele which peels from the hands, face and other parts of the body in con valescent patientsishighly contagious. Baths should be continued every day, for four times, when the disinfection of tho skin may be regardod as complete. This, however, should not be done without first Consulting the medical attendant.
