According to tho Army Eegister for 1873, juat out, the conimissioned portion of Únele Sam's army consista of 12 general officers, 15 adjutant generáis, 8 inspector generáis, 10 judge advocates, one chief signal offioer, G9 quarterniasters, 26 commissaiies, 103 medical officere, 54 paymasters, 103 engineers, Cl ordinance officers, 30 post chaplains, 425 cavalry officers, 274 artillery officers, 881 infantry officers, 8 professors, 293 cadets and 207 officers rotired froin active service, makiug a total of 2,730. Tho nurnber of enlisted men is 30,000 (on paper), with an allowance of 375 hospital stewards, 8 veterinary surgeons, G4 superintendents of national ceiueteries and 158 Indian scouts, with master wagoners and wagoners ad hlritum. During the year the army lost 43 officers by resignation, 35 by doath, 2 ly rotiremeut (wholly retired), and lü by dismissal, including 10 cashiered. There were 88 appointments during tho year, of which 20 were froui civil lifo and 3 from the ranks.
