Speakirig evil of others is one of the most unamiablë habits that can be acquired, and one that leads to infinite niisehief. It is riot always easy to avoid tuis, for there are a great many porsons in the world who are not wliat they ought to be, and who do many things they ought not to do. lt is hard for a bluut, generous niind to refrain trom exprussing itself about mean people and iiinin acts. There is something in meanness and dishonesty that arotises the iudignation of such a miud, and it likts tho luxury of denounoir.g them iu bold, unsparing language. But the practice, as a practtce, is a troublesomo and daugurous one. Ibera are occasions when it is -om duty to speak out in exposure of wrong, but ni general it is best to abstain irom uvil ipqakiftg, eren of etfil persons. Wc are not made judges of of otliers' actions ; no one has a right to assume tho character of arbiter and censor. Even the best of is have our faults, and if one should presume to denounoo tho vio and miBoonduct of others, tho world would be given up to dcfauiation. We ni ay seo and hear nritoh that we do not admire and eannot like; we may become cognizant of many ovil deeds done by evil persons; but it is the part of wisdom and discretion to pass them by without hótieej excépt whfii to speak of theic èantiously may bë uocessary as a warning to a friend. We ail havo enough enemies in thi world, without provoking others by il' tempered comiuents. The enniity of evi men is a thing to be avoided, for while i can do us no good, it may do us muc harm. Besides, we may make uiistake in the haste of honest indignation, anc speak evil of good men for acts we do 110 understand. Such a mistake ia wors than the other ; tor while it. is imprudsn to promi8cuously denounce evil men, i is cruel wrong to defame a good ono.
