5EEMTHIS, April 1.- Tho storm at Cantón; Miss., seems to have been much greateF was inferred from a meager dispatcb ürst sent. An extra issued from the Mail office Saturday says : We had gone to press last night and had begun printing off the evening papur when there came up the most fearf'ulaud destructivo tornado ever experienced in this región of country. The clouds had been very threatening and vivid ahd incessant flash08 of lightniiig prosaged a thunder storm, but no one expeoted tho fcarful g tle that suddenly burst npon us atabouttt o'clock, or that families, sitting peacefully at thfiir firesidc,. not lireauiing of danger, in a few second's to be rendered homeless, and barely escape with their lives. The eourse of the tornado was fronv the northwest, and' its track was scarcely over 10' yards in width and Isiy through the of thu town-. The houses were utterly demolrshed and blown 5way leaving the bare walls standing twisted and distorted in all manner of shapoa; brick walls, buildings, and solidi cbiiittiieys were blown down, missiles were sent through the air, such as timbers, bricks, and pieoes of wood, with fearful force. The occasion ftltogether beggars desoriptior. The Pearoe House is in ruim, and the stores, and shops above it, one of which was a one story brick store, leveled to the ground. The old stone house is a wreek, with its roofiufr, galleripa, and pillars all gone. DwelHng houses- are mere heaps of timber, kiteheus and outsbods blown absolutely away, yards W;ept cloa,n of evrey il ving tb ing, poultry, doge, and all vanished utterly. Bubgtantial dwollings wero torn from their foundation, hfiavily laden cars blown from the track, hugsj pieces of timber carried many hundred yards and buried where they feil in the earth.
