Bhade operates simply by preserving the ammonia which is in the boiI, and is contmually turnished by rain and snow water aud also by man ure, and whioh is rap'idly drivcu off by a scorehing sun To preserve the ammonia, the skillful farmer plows hia manure sbortly ai'ter it is spread upon the soil ; and spreads bis inanures upon his meadows late in the fail, or in the winter, or early in the spring so that the ammonia may be washed out of it into the soil, and prevent its evaporation by the sun. Ammonia is food for plants, and is necessary to their rapid growtb. It has been ascertained by repeated experiments in Er.cland that the largest crops of wheat can'be raised by.imparting to the soil an pxtra quantity of ammonia, either by directly spreading salts of ammonia on it or guano. Hunce the greatest fertility of tbe soil will be more surely preserved by an ültemation of orops rnther than naked fallow, from which a scorchiug sun
