will be found in anotbcr column, and we invite for it the oarefuly acrutiny of overy reader, ho lie Democrat, Rcpublican or " Liberal." It ignores the doad past, and plasta the Demooracy of the great central State of the Union upon the living issues of the day. It recognizes the faut that the " world moves," sends up no groan over the natural resulta of the war, and sheds no tears over the enfranohiseruent of the negro. It does not even batter its head against negro suffrage, and repudiates the greenbaek heresy which was ono of the clogs that weighted down the party in 1868 It declares agninst centralizaron acd tho subordination of independent departments of the government or of independent States, and in favor of strict coustruction of tho coustitution ; opposes all legislatioa in tho aid of monopolies, declares for a nue tariff, and favors holding the govornment duniain in trust f'or actual settlers. It censures aliko the Credit Mobilier pluuderers and tho salary grabbers; holds tho Republioan party - the party in power in the national govermnent and in ahnost every Stato of the Union - responsible for unjust and corrupt legislation ; and appeala to " patriotio men of every class, without regard to party naines or differences,, to unite on terms of perfect equality in the struggle to rescuo tho Government frora tho hands of dishenest men and redoem it from the flood of corruption whicli threatens its ruin." It seems a difficult job for Radical journalists to piek a flaw in tho platform, and they are thereforo content with denouncing its propoundors as knaves and crites, and predicting, witb any amount of impudence and asturance, that the Detnocracy can not be trusted to niaintain and carry out tho principies they avow, - The Maine Democratie State Convention, held on the 12th inst, nominaf ed Joseph Titcomb for Governor, and unauimously adopted thé Ohio platform. In tho Virginia Consorvative State Convention, held at Kiohinond, ou the 6th and 7th inst., Gou. James L. Kbmpbe was unanimously nominated for Governor, Robert E. Withees for Lieut.-Governor, and R. T. Daniels for Attorney General. Gen. Kempeb telegraphed his aeoeptance of the nomination, and expressed confideuce in his election. The platform declares that Conservativo suocess is a necossity to Virginia ; in favor of impartial justice for every citizen, native or adopted, white or colored ; for the culUvation of seiitiments of good will between the different sections of the Union ; for free schools for the white and colored races respectively ; and for tho corupletion of the Jaines River and Kanawha. canal or water line by the general goveniment. This last proposition comes too late in tho day. The fiat has gone forth against all sueh. enterprises boiug taken under the wing of tho general governinent. Tlic Consíitntiomil CoinmissioiN . Gov. Baoley has at tho last announced the appointinents provided for ut the last eession of the Legislature. Thoy are ñoloiuon L. "Witliey, of Xent. G. V. N. Lothrop, of Wayne. The Commission is to meet at the Senato Chamber in Lansing, August 7th, at noon, Hnd must complete its labora and report to the Governor on or before the first day of December. - There aro soine able men on the Coramission, but the majority of them have no special qualifications for oonstitutiou makers. A NEWS paragrapk in a daily exchango says that Gov. Dix " has pardoned Geojige Smitii, aentenced to three years at Sing Sing for burglary, on condition that hu leave the Stato and reinaiu away for two years." Not at all a coniuiendable or excusable act in Gov. Dix, and one whieh the Executivo of every Stato in the Union- not guilty of the same otfense ugainst justiee and tho claims of good neighborhood- should promptly and energetically protest against. It is an outrage for tho Governor of Now York or any other State to turn its convicted and condeumed crimináis loóse, not upon satisfactory evidance of reform or now ovidence throwing doubt upon their guilt, but on a simple pledge to leave the Stato and " ply their vocatiou " in pastures now. The pardoning power tima admiuistered is an intolerable nuisance and the press of the country should unitedly speak in its coudemnatiori. whether Goy. Dix " or any other man " be tho offender. William ALLEN, the Democratie nomines for Governor of Ohio, will bo remembered by all the older readers and politicians as prominent in Ohio and national politics more than a third of a ceutury ago. He was bom in Virginia in 1807, emigrated to Ohio in his boybood, enterad the public eervice in 1833 as a niembor of the lower House of Cougress and in 1837 was transferred to the Sonate. Ho was prominent in the suocessful fight made to expuns-e tho tion censuring President Jackson, and ako in tho "fifty-four forty or fight ' campaign. He uovor lost a day or a vote and never dodged, opposcd monopoly and proteo tivo legislation, and didn't voto to increase nis own salary with or without a baok-pay grab. He ia a scholarly man, idontified for inany years with the agriculturists, of uublemished reputation, and will make a big fight for victory. ■ I M Senator Morton has called a moeting of the Committee on Privileges and Eleotions, to be held at New York, Oct. lst, to considor the proposod ameridments to tho constitutional provisions regulating the eloction of President and VicePresident. It is understood that leading constitutional lawyers and writers will bo invitod to address the committoo.
