Sunset Cox tells a good story of his first meeting with Mark Twain. Mark called on Mr. Cox at tho Capítol in Washington and suiit in his caid as Samuel L. Ciernen. Mr. Cox, being totally unaequainted with tho ñamo, left his seat to soe what the stranger witnted ot' him, 8upi)osing, oí' course, that the culi was a business one. Mr. Clemeus began by saying, " 1 called upon you on iny wife'B account." Mr. Oox said " Ah," in an unenlightencd niuuner. " She told me she had sat on your knee." " On my knee V exclaimed Mr. Cox. "Eeally, sir," he aaid, " your language is incomprehensible." " Yes," resumed Mr. Clemens ; " she used to sit on your knee ; she was a little girl then, and I was not there so, I'm not jealous ; don't take the trouble to apologize." Here the laugh oauie in, explanations followcd, and a pleasant acquaintanco was formed on both sido.
