When Ben. Butler was appointod a Major General of volunteers by President Lincoln in 1861 - shortly after the Massachusett Gth Infantry was tired into by a plug-ugly mob at Baltiinore - the fanious Massachusetts Congressman was serenaded by soveral niilitaiy bands at the National Hotel, Washington, and returned his tUanks for the distinguished honor that had just been conferred upon him and made a characteristic little speech in which he said that he had voted fifty two times for tbenomination of Jeff. Davis for the Democratie Presidential candidato at Charleston in 1800, and wished God would forgive him, but he said he didn't believe God ever would. We rathor think Butler's engineering of the Congrersional back pay steal will meet with the same result and that God will never forgive him for his participation in that nefarious transaction. At any rate we trust the people of Massachusetts will never forgivo such a flagrant robbery of the United States Treasury as was this back steal, and that no such man as the "God made" Butler will ever be made Governor of Massachusetts. - Sog-inairĂ¼tu
