When Mrs. Siddons was plüying in Dublin, at that part where a drum sounds, and she exclaims : " A drum' a drum ! Macbeth doth come ! " there was soine difiiculty or neglect in obtaining the necessary instrument, and to her amazement a trunipet was sounded. She immediately saw how absurd it would be to say " drum " while the sound of the trumpet filled tho ears of the audience, so she said : " A trumpet ! a trumpet ! " andstopped short, amid brcathlesssilence, not knowing how to rhyme, when a voice trom the gallery called out " Macbeth doth stump it ! " at which the house broke out into a peal of laughter and the tragedienne advanced to the footlights and bowed her acknowledgment tbr the relief. She afterward tried to fiud out who it was, but failed to do so ; and she never forgot what she consideoed the most genuino piece of wit she had niet with in all her experience.
