Merchante doing business at Manchester get their goods at 33 cents per hundred ; Ann Arbor merchante pay 50. This fact we learn from one of ouv citizens doing business both in our city and Manchester. The village on the Baisin has two raiiroads and tbe eompetition brings down freight 17 cents per liundred. We could make no stronger argument in favor of tho imniediate completion of the Toledo, Aun Arbor and Northern Ilailroad. Let the Director resolve upon a narrow gauge, negotiate their bonds, and push the work forward. The rolling; stock can be had- to start with - of the ' United Rolling Stock Campany." The trial of Myron Brown, charged with firing the M. E. Church at Ypsilauti, was concluded in the Circuit Court on Saturday afternoon last, the jury rendering a vordict of not nilty. Mr. Brown was irnmediately arrested ou a warrant issucd by Justice McMahon, the complaint being for the burglary and robbery of the office of Justice Crane and City Clerk Woodruff, and was held for trial the sum of $2,000 bail. The suretie3 were rurnishod, and Brown is, we presume, " plying his vocation " at our ueighboring city down the Huron. In the earlier days of our journalistic career, perhaps when we were only a 'prentice, or may be but "printer'8 devil," a paper was established in New York called The Buc.cane.er, which frankly displayed at its mast-head the folllowing motto: " We'Il rake fora and aft every lubberly eraf t That comes in our way, without fear, For to chase and to slay, and take what we may, Ia the trade of the bold buccaneer." And now, judging by the raid made on the Arous columns.and without as much as " a thank you " 01 " by your leave," we are aaf e in s&ying that the Detroit Evening News has inherited the piratijal propensities of the defunct Buccaneer, but without a tithe of its frankness. To office attaché or "local" we commend the liiies beginning "while the lamp holds out to barn." We have on our table, bearing the imprint of Loopold & Baer, Leipzig, a 48 page pamphlet with the following title : " On the use of the Suffixes tep, top, tip, ta in Homer ; a Philologicai Kssertation written to procure the degree of Doctor of Philosophy irom the University of Leipzig, by Martin Luther D'Ooge, of Michigan." As the object of the dissertation was accoinplishedwe will take it for granted that it is "tip top," without a reading ; that is if Dr. D'Ooge will excuse us. However we congratúlate Prof. IX ou his success. The Lingards are coming agaiu, and on Thursday evening next, at Hill's Opera House, will present " The New Magdalen," by Wilkie Collins, dramatized by him from his great novel, with Alice Dunning as " Merry Merrick," supported by a first-class comedy company. Win. Horace Lingard will also give, after the comedy; twenty new impersonations, and his former success in this line guarantees something rich and unique. It is some time since our citizens have teen favored with an evening's entertainment, ind the Lingards will meet a hearty welcome. The offieers of the First ï ational Bank of this this city publish " A Card " in another column which will be found of special interest to the AügC8 readers and the public at large.
