-It is matea by a railway man that the construction of 1,000 miles of railroad iu a year requires the labor of 20,000 men. Last year 0,427 miles, requiring 130,000 men, were constructed in the United States. In the 10 years ending with 1872 the mileage constructed in this country was 33,934, or about 3,400 miles a year During these 10 years the increase of mileage has varied f rom 738 in 1864 to 7,779 in 1871. It is thought that the new roads constructed this year will not exceed 2,000 miles, so that 60,000 laborers will be released, or have been, for agricultural or other pursuits. If these raen 6hould produce as they should the producĂs of their labor would add so inuch to the business of the country that many thousand new miles of railway would become necessary. At all events, for the present the labor market has a fnll supply, and men mest work to live.
