The JEnglish hotel is a surprise and wonder to the American, and of these the London hotels are the most Bnglish. There is a romantic tradition of the cosy and coinfortable English inn. It exista only in romance. The London hotel is a great establishment, built by a railroad or other joint stock company, but its running has not risen above the chop house, lts economies are wonderful. lts bill of fare is limited and monotonous. lts resources and the charges are based upon the idea that the guest will gn no further than a chop or a cut of the joint and two of the commonest vegetables, and thia probably contents the average Englishman. Very little provisiĆ³n is made for dessert, save of cheese. A dinner of soup, a cut of the joint and two common vegetables, and some very poor pudding or tart, as they cali fruit-pie, will seem luxurious in price.
