- M. sepg, who constructed the Suez Canal, proposes to build a railroad trom Oronburg, Kussia, to Peshawur, ludia, a disof 2,600 miles. By connecting railways with this route, i'reight, passengers, or troops could be furwarded frora Calais to Calcutta, through Warsaw and Moscow, without a break of gauge. The entire line, two-thirds of which has been finished, will b 7,ΓΌ00 miles in length. For the unbuilt portion, M. Lesseps asks $700,000 from the government of Kussia to pay for preliminary work. lf it should be built, the railroad will play an important part in any complications aiising between Erigland and Kussia, as the latter nation could make a rapid descent, without much fear of intevruption, upon the British possessions in India, and attack England at one of her niost valued but least defensive points. Henee the project is extensively discussed by the English press.
