A game of cards, in whick a huiiiau lif was at stake, was playod on the 9th of September, at the Eitter Hotel, Heidelberg, by tour young students, one of whom, Sigfred Meyer, was au American, from Chicago. It appears that the four men had forraerly been intímate friends, and they met, it seems, on the ftbove day at the Swan tavern, where they drank a good deal, and finally began to quarrei. One of thetn, Oount Ottendorf, called Meyer a cowardly Jew, whereupon the latter promptly challenged him. Ottendorf aceepted the challenge iwuiediately. üeyer, in a tone of great excitement, aroposed that all four should repair to ;he Bitter Hotel, and there play a game of " sixty-six," The loser should shoot liimseif with a pistol. ïhis proposition was accepted, and the four students repaired to the hotel. They ordered wine wad cards to be brought up to a private room, and Ludoken, one of the four, procured two loaded pistols fiom a neighboring aimorer. The fourth student dealt the cards, and Ottendorf and Meyer seated tbemselves, a piatol lying by the side of each. The first few minutes the game remained almost even. But then Mej'er obtained a signal advuntage, and Ottendorf', seeing that he was lost, suddenly jumped up, and, exclaiming, " Adieu, my friende," seized his pistol, and shot himself through the right temple. He feil a corpse to the Hoor, while his companions stood as if petrified tor a moment, and then hurried from the room. When the proprietor of the hctel hastened into the room, ho found the dead Count lying on the floor. He gave an alarm, and the pólice started soon after in pursuit of the fugitive student. Late in the afternoon thev succpeded in arresting Immich, who made the above statement. Meyer and Ludeken escaped across the Frenoh frontier. Ottendorf was the son of a woalthy landed proprietor in Westphalia. At the time of his doath he was only mneteeu.
