Michioan Cextbai, Cattle Yauds ) Monday, Doe. 22. $ Under the late firmness of the market shipments here continuo active and exhibit a favorable showing for the season. At this period last year the weather was intensely cold and stocks of whatover quality suftered from exposure. Tlms f ar the quality of stock denotes a change, being leas scraggy in appearance and consequently better fed. The complaints, too, which were numerous last year regarding the provender of stock are not heard, the mildness of the weather doing much toward the fattemug of such stock as is designed for niarket. The shipraent of through stock is now being diverted to various roads. Receipts for the week and corresponding week last year were as follows : Cattlo. Hogs. Sheep. Week ending December 23, 133 5,499 829 Week ending Dec. 23, 1872, 591 1,475 6,406 Beceived from Chicago market, 1,600 hogs against l,07S of the previoua week. CATTLE. Tho market opened briskly, austaiiied ly a firm local demand and the presence of Eastern shippers who bought more liborally than for some weeks. City butchers sought a choice article for Christniass week, and two chotee steers weighing 2,000 lbs. each were securcd at about six cents per pound. A fine quality of beef cattle averaging 1,000 to 1,200 lbs., brought Í4 25, and a choice quality $4 35, but of which class the lots were not numeroua. All inferior article from trióse specinea som Dy the heaa, bnnging trom $3 75 to 84. The market was tboroughly stocked, and thero was nuich coramnt ou the prices rualized. HOOS. The supply seems to huve shorteivud ud auitn suddenly during the weelc, only ono-half of the number usually receivod being forwardod. Paokers seem also more indifferent to buying up Iota, and prices have dropped a trifle, though this cannot be held as indicatiTe of a future decline. It is move probable that the hog erop is about exhausted in the immediate States, leaving the supply to be derived from remote States in the Northwest. Selected lots were sold at $4 60 and $4 75. Mixed lote will hereafter be ubjected to strict culling. Pricea during tliis week last year ranged from il 75 to Y4 per hundred, collapsing almost entirely about Christmas. SHEEP. Quite a volume was rushed in this week, though prices held up thereunder amazingly well. The activity displayed by professional operators showed present contlienoe in the market, and the shipmonts eastward this week oxoeeded any one week for some time. Choico selected lots changed hands at ïl 50. The rpugher Iota of mixed grades brought S3 50 and Í4. Lots averaging 90 lbs brought $4 73 and $6 this week last year. The improvement in quality over that of last year is very marked. Kino's Cattlb Yabds, J Dütboit, Mouday evening, Doe. 22. CATTLE. Common cattle were dull and hardly so high as last week, the demand being moatly for Chriatmas cattle. They were in large supply and sold actively according to quality from 3 1-2 as high as 6c. The reporta from the East by private sources were lesa favorable to snippers and soveral lots were bought on speculation to hold orer.
