the plains, and often, in the early days, when people traveled with ox-teams, it presented to tho weary, oxhausted and thirsty gold-seeker the appoarance of water, apparently within easy reaoh, yet alas, a delusion and a snare, that led astray, disappointed and disgustad everybody. But probably the most perfect, picturesque picture, in the line of optical illusion, ever seen in these parts, by either old-timer or new-comer, appeared last evening, a littlo before sun down. A doublé, or reversed imago of the Kocky mountains, from Mount Vernon to the Cach-la Poudre, nnd from tho foot-hills back to the grandest peaks, was suspended in the east of the city, and apparently just beyond the outermost houses. The refraction was so perfect that the few who saw the image wero actually puzzled to distinguish between the real and the fiotitious mountains. The lovely, but substantial picturo, with its heaped upbeauties in endless variety, was quickly dissipated, tho white turban on IJong'g peak being the last object to vanish. - Hochj Mount ain News. Grand Eapids has been yisited by 24 fires within six months, four of which burned property to tho amount of $175,000.
