A short time ago tho House of Representativas passed a resolution calling upon the Secretary oí the Navy to inform them how much ot' the appropriation for the fiscal year onding June 30, 1874, was expended prior to January last, and how much of the $4,000,000 appropriated by the present Congress has been expenned and for what purposes. Ttíe Secretary has preparad a reply, in which he says the appropriations lor the navy for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1874, exclusive of $182,940 appropriated in the LegislaUve, Executive and Judicial Appropriation bilí, atnountcd to $24,048,150. From this appropriatio was drawn prior to January lst last $18,384,394, of which amount thero was expended prior to that dato $1,923,725, making the amount oí' these appropriations actually lessenod $16,461,668, and leaving to keep up the establishment $7,587.481, To this was addod the $4,000,000 by an appropriation in December last, raaking tho availablo balance January lst $11,586,381. Of tho sum of $4,000,000 nothing had actually been taken at the date of the resolution, except by the Bureau of Construction and Repair, which had expended from that appropriation $393,000 in tho ropairs of the iron-clads Ajax, Canuionicus, Wyaudotte, Dictator, Roanoke and Terror. Tho $4,000,000 was placed to the credit of tho sevoral buroaus, and went to reimburse thom sor extraordinary expeuditures which they had been required to make, and wero uot contemplated in the regular appropriations. The department does not expect to need any furtoer appropriations for the curront year. On Saturday last Mrs. James Grey left three children in a house sevon miles from Lincoln, Nebraska, leaving homo. On her return she discovered the house on fire, and before she could get there the roof feil in. All three children were burned to death.
