It' wo inay judge froin present indicatidns the people of Wisconsin vvill have no reason to regret cheir action last fall in electing a Reform Legislature. The members chesen on tho plege of retrenchment and reform are apparently animated with an earnest desire to f ulfill the pledge. As showiug this it need only be stated that while in 1837 the Legislatura appropriated $301,246 83 for the support of the Deaf and Dumb Asylum, the Industrial School for Boys, the Madison Insane Asylum, the Northern Insane Asylum, the Blind Asylum, the State Prison and the Soldiers' Orphans' Home, the amount proposed to bo appropnated this year is only f242,800 - more thau a quarter of a million dollars less than tho appropriati on last year. Thes figures teil their own story. Thcy show that the Reformers are attaoking the expenditures with an unsparing hand. and they are not likely to confine their efforts at retrenchment to the permanent appropriatiods, but will exercise economy in all expenditures. This is the way to command the contidenco of the people. Tho Reformers in Wisconsin, in tho campaign of last year, attacked tho existing administration, omong other things, for extravagance. The people wore convinced that there was something in the charges, and gave expression to their con victions by eleoting the Reform Stato ticket and a majority of Reforms to the lower house of the Legislature. In accordance with their promises the Reform administration and the Reform Legislaturo are doing practical work for the benefit of the people. They thus vindícate tho wisdom of the people in last fall making a change in. the administration of affairs. They show that they are Reformers in fact as well as in name, and that they thoroughly appreciate the demand for a more economical administration of affairs, and with it lighter taxatiou. With such a record as they are making for themselves tho Reformers need have no fear of tho result of future
